Henry Rollins Spinning at Amoeba This kind of Saturday For Record Store Day

On one day each year independent record stores all over the world unite to celebrate the joys of music and crate-digging. Amoeba Showmanship has a few special actions planned, included a Disc-jockey set from KCRW’s own Carol Rollins at 2pm THIS Saturday, 04 16.

After his arranged, he’ll hang out with fans and indication copies of his been vocal word and music produces before heading to KCRW for his or her weekly show from Six to 8pm ( always available on desire in the archives here).

The particular all-day celebration at Amoeba will also incorporate special gift bags (while they last), limited edition vinyl along with CD releases, t-shirt silk screening process and more.

From Henry:

“Music is probably the main ingredients that gets people through the hard times and the existential level line that life can be all too often. Without music, life can be a monumental drag. If you’d prefer these bands, you want to keep everyone fed and going down the trail. So whenever you can …buy an archive! If you’re hungry, buy the file, skip the sandwich. Your bands are depending on that you keep this thing going.

Too few good music will never be a challenge. Not enough time to listen to all the good music that’s around is the problem. That’s an incredible problem and the solution is being part of that problem. Hey currently!

Support bands and Report Store Day. You are a huge part of what makes it happen. While Sun Ra once said, ‘The songs is listening.’”

Something enjoyable if, like me, you’re not went to the desert for Coachella!

Keren Ann – My Name is Trouble

Here’s another music I haven’t been able to get out of my personal head lately.

The cover for Keren Ann’s sixth solo album, “101”, captured my attention first, with the singer brandishing a gun and seeking like she’s ready to commit a crime. It’s a concept album for sure, with the multi-cultural singer (she’s lived in Italy, Israel, the Netherlands and New York) utilizing the role of femme fatale.

The fairly sweet chanteuse is more like a sultry temptress for the album opener “My Name can be Trouble” which you can download right now (for 24 hours only) as Today’s Top Track. Grab it while you can because when soon as you hear it when, you’ll want to hear it again!

Barbara Bestor is actually behind the new offices for the local label we love, Dangerbird Records (home of Silversun Pickups). The girl Bohemian modern design aesthetic models her apart and she even comes close her work to creating striper tracks — a rare groove that can live on for a long time.

I was excited to see that Barbara selected “Combination Pizzas Hut and Taco Bell” as one of her monitors. I was hoping she would discuss the connections between architecture and music and she didn’t disappoint – whether discussing the crash of fast food forces in one building or the soundtracks she results in in her head when designing a place.

Download a Free Mixtape from Ana Tijoux

Via KCRW volunteer Taryn Olsen:

Other than “hello” and “say thanks to you” I don’t speak Spanish at all. But when I noticed Ana Tijoux last summer, I went home, bought her lp, and was trying desperately to roll my “r’s” along with her.

While I don’t determine what she’s saying 98% of the time, there’azines something universal in Ana’utes delivery and her heart that makes it impossible not to crunch and listen when she’s on the mic.

I suppose Furthermore, i have a personal bias also, being a girl. I love just how Ana Tijoux embraces a toughness that’s equal parts undeniably ferocious and somehow feminine and sexy.

While I’ve learned Ana calls a few places house already (a native Chilean growing up within Paris), being a devoted Angeleno My spouse and i secretly wish she would start off calling LA home.

Realizing I want to see more of Ana within LA, I was pleasantly surprised viewing the latest rad-tastic video to go with her new mix tape (download it for free on her website).

Seeing video snippets of Ana Tijoux outside the Music Box and the sweeping LA cityscapes via Garth Trinidad’s most recent Pre-Grammy Brunch taught me to be very happy! Not to mention the video itself is just beyond cool.   Enjoy!

Family Guy Turned Lounge Lizard Seth MacFarlane

Despite my tender youngsters, I’ve been privileged to witness just about every kind of live songs performance under the sun, from pyrotechnic-filled arena rock to opulent China opera to improvised hippie drum-circles.  Consequently I’ve turn out to be something like a sonic Anthony Bourdain, always in look for of the unexpected and the less likely in the world of popular tunes.  Last month, an opportunity arose to view one such event.

Comedian Seth MacFarlane associated with “Family Guy” fame joined a couple 12 musicians in performing songs from his forthcoming large band album at Club Nokia.  Fans of his / her show could easily suppose his affection for that style of music, with its occasional adventures into the world of Broadway show music – heck, even the opening breaks celebrate that sound.

Even now, it’s a bold move for somebody who is best known for low-brow (yet highly clever) television humourous to venture unheralded into the realm of high-brow, old-fashioned musical entertainment.  But possessing spent his entire expert career voicing a wide range of oddball characters, MacFarlane surely knows the boundaries of his pipes and when he thought he ended up being capable of singing standards, who had been to tell him he couldn’t?

The Club Nokia show proved he has the chops.  Plus it proved the sincerity regarding his project as well, because comedy was kept low, while he instead focused on your remarkably deep catalog of tunes he offered upward.  Sure, he managed to slander an entire country with a bland introductory joke and even got his duet partner, Sara Bareilles, to drop a good F-bomb.  But his sonorous baritone hung fairly comfortably alongside the impeccably enjoyed orchestra.

If there was a clear flaw, it was in his point presence, which at times experienced a little distant, especially when this guitar rock band was soloing along and MacFarlane didn’t appear to have anything else to do but preserve sipping at his h2o.  In his defense, that kind of music makes singers wander a fine line between becoming coolly detached during the instrumental passages or just hogging the spotlight.

Commemorate one more fully appreciate the particular skill with which performers such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett may thrill audiences with nothing more than a microphone, a spotlight plus a swinging band at their particular back.  Should MacFarlane care to get this to type of live performance a regular part of his career, I’m sure encounter will help him find the right harmony.

In any case, MacFarlane’s album of several of his favorite lesser-known standards, “Music Is superior to Words,” is due out in Sept.  The Club Nokia demonstrate was filmed for release around the same time, so you’ll be able judge for yourself how Sinatra-esque Stewie’s creator is.

ERIC J. LAWRENCE

Editor’s Note: We’re trying to get Seth on KCRW’s Guest DJ Project to talk about 5 associated with his favorite songs. Fingers entered!

KCRW Exclusive: Download Stay Refreshing from J. Rocc

A couple week-ends ago my best friend was hanging out at my place with her 7 month old baby and I warned her that they were going into my “new music listening zone” and would just have to listen to whatever I popped on the gamer. No kid’s music to me.

I grabbed J Rocc’s fresh album Some Cold Rock Stuf and it was PERFECT. Child Hunter was into it! The girl was dancing with us, reducing to some funky tunes. We’d a blast and I loved the whole album – in fact we even went back to a few tracks there was to hear twice.

KCRW Exclusive: Glasvegas – Euphoria, Take Me (Jason Rutledge remix)

Many singers don’t shout with an accent. I’m SO happy James Allan, frontman for Scottish rock band Glasvegas, can. Aside from the swirling, epic appears of the music, I can recognize a Glasvegas song in under 10-seconds. And I mean that totally being a compliment.

James wrote the latest album, “Euphoric Heartbreak”, around the corner from KCRW, on the beach here in Santa Monica. We can’t help but listen pertaining to elements of California sunshine creating their way into the anthemic songs. Frankly, I’m not sure it cheered your pet up much, but the results are definitely worth a hear and you can stream the album in full on KCRW’s Album Critique page.

Joey Burns From Calexico Talks About Circo

We like Calexico’s music here at KCRW so when My partner and i heard they were behind the actual soundtrack for Circo, we were intrigued. The music activity is a mix of Mexican along with American pop music along with Calexico’s Joey Burns tells us what it was like to work on the video:

From Joey Burns:

“When director Aaron Schock delivered us an email describing his or her documentary film about three decades of a Mexican family show, it peaked both Steve Convertino’s and my fascination.

What angle would he take with the story, wherever would it lead, and how would it not look and feel?

What we were consequently sent, was an amazing close on the Ponce family who many of us instantly fell in love with. Viewing the amount of work the whole family along with animals had to deal with had been astonishing. The children really are in the middle of it all and whoever has seen it is touched in a very special way.

Aaron sent people a version of the movie with mostly Calexico material in the short term placed to give us a concept of what he wanted musically anf the husband encouraged us to get while creative as we wanted.

This individual wound up working very tightly with us, which eventually directed us all to become good friends. However, we had never met in person due to the low budget nature with the film.

So we sent music sketches and shared suggestions through emails and phone cell phone calls relating to the score. I must say I used to be pleasantly surprised when we finished your project at how much tunes we made in a very short time period and how effective it felt in its relationship to the Ponce family’azines adventures.”–Joey Burns

A true history of creativity in 2011! Circo starts up in LA on The spring 8.  Find out more about where the movie is screening in Los angeles here

Voxhaul Broadcast – “Steal the Diamonds”

It’s interesting what sort of man singing in falsetto can be very sexy. Prince taught me that at an early age, but the song I’m thinking of now is “Steal the Diamonds” by nearby band Voxhaul Broadcast. Thanks to Brian Dennis’ vocals and super groovy bass line, this tune may be one of their best yet.

Stream “Steal the Diamonds”Audio clip: Adobe Flash Gamer (version 9 or above) is necessary to play this audio show. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

When they visited MBE recently, the big conversation was about where their sound was going – they seemed to be straddling two worlds, one a bit more poppy and the various other hard rockin’.

I’m not sure their full-length “Timing is Everything” answers that question and I’m not sure it has to. That features new favorites similar to Diamonds and “Leaving on the 6th,” as well as songs we’ve been spinning on the air for many several weeks, like a new version of “Blackout Conversation” (detailed with chorus handclaps).

When I first met the actual band’s manager early last year, he or she told me that this band was destined to follow the path associated with other Orange County breakout groups like Cold War Little ones. He was sure of that.

They conquered SXSW last month and are touring with Airborne Toxic Event (including a date in the Music Box on Apr 28) so it seems they are well on their way.

Review: Royksopp at The Wiltern

From KCRW volunteer Siea Drucker –

The Wiltern was abuzz last night in anticipation for Royksopp’s descent in to Los Angeles.   A startling amount of people turned out for this display.  The line was seemingly endless.  Good thing I was wearing our walking shoes.

Once we lastly made it in, DJ Mikey / set the tone for the nighttime, spinning magnetic pounding bests while everyone sipped his or her Heinekens and people-watched.  I must say, the crowd on your own was an eye-full.  The movie theater was filled with the most arbitrary aay of scene-sters from Mohawk-coifed tattooed neo-punks, in order to beatnik hippy types, plaid-wearing hipster-nerds, and J. Crew cardigan-clad conservatives.  Royksopp definitely knows how to bring together the particular disparate masses.

Soon, Jon Hopkins took activity is unassumingly; one singular man on one giant stage with a hide of technology at their fingertips and a massive market to please.  He began with a bang, water removal out the meaty beats that actually shook our entire bodies.  I’m fairly sure my kidneys ended up fist-pumping.   His hands flew around his machinery with ease, crisscrossing to pry apart out a pounding largemouth bass you knew was just around the corner.  I was amazed that he were find moments in between the actual cadences to casually sip his or her beer – the epitome associated with cool.

By the time Royksopp took the stage the crowd had somehow grown exponentially.  Packed in just like sardines, I only saw brief slivers of the stage throughout the demonstrate.  And while I know they are a visible band, donning bags on his or her heads, intricate masks, and glowing accouterments aplenty, I can say that I had been fully content with my even experience.

Clearly, these guys have their game down.  They know how to work the crowd, seamlessly mixing soulful trance-like selections from their latest full-length, “Senior“, with effervescent dance-inducing jams from “Junior“.   The viewers reeled with each climactic swell, making for a constant resurgence of energy in their set.

Highlights included “Remind Me” as well as “Happy Up Here.” And remarkably, I really fell for some with the tracks on “Senior” that had evaded our taste before.

If you’re keen on Royksopp, hearing them live is unquestionably worth your while.  Their songs stand out, charged with new meaning as well as power.  So happy these Norwegians made their way offshore to greet us with your energy and talent.
