Family Guy Turned Lounge Lizard Seth MacFarlane

Despite my tender youngsters, I’ve been privileged to witness just about every kind of live songs performance under the sun, from pyrotechnic-filled arena rock to opulent China opera to improvised hippie drum-circles.  Consequently I’ve turn out to be something like a sonic Anthony Bourdain, always in look for of the unexpected and the less likely in the world of popular tunes.  Last month, an opportunity arose to view one such event.

Comedian Seth MacFarlane associated with “Family Guy” fame joined a couple 12 musicians in performing songs from his forthcoming large band album at Club Nokia.  Fans of his / her show could easily suppose his affection for that style of music, with its occasional adventures into the world of Broadway show music – heck, even the opening breaks celebrate that sound.

Even now, it’s a bold move for somebody who is best known for low-brow (yet highly clever) television humourous to venture unheralded into the realm of high-brow, old-fashioned musical entertainment.  But possessing spent his entire expert career voicing a wide range of oddball characters, MacFarlane surely knows the boundaries of his pipes and when he thought he ended up being capable of singing standards, who had been to tell him he couldn’t?

The Club Nokia show proved he has the chops.  Plus it proved the sincerity regarding his project as well, because comedy was kept low, while he instead focused on your remarkably deep catalog of tunes he offered upward.  Sure, he managed to slander an entire country with a bland introductory joke and even got his duet partner, Sara Bareilles, to drop a good F-bomb.  But his sonorous baritone hung fairly comfortably alongside the impeccably enjoyed orchestra.

If there was a clear flaw, it was in his point presence, which at times experienced a little distant, especially when this guitar rock band was soloing along and MacFarlane didn’t appear to have anything else to do but preserve sipping at his h2o.  In his defense, that kind of music makes singers wander a fine line between becoming coolly detached during the instrumental passages or just hogging the spotlight.

Commemorate one more fully appreciate the particular skill with which performers such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett may thrill audiences with nothing more than a microphone, a spotlight plus a swinging band at their particular back.  Should MacFarlane care to get this to type of live performance a regular part of his career, I’m sure encounter will help him find the right harmony.

In any case, MacFarlane’s album of several of his favorite lesser-known standards, “Music Is superior to Words,” is due out in Sept.  The Club Nokia demonstrate was filmed for release around the same time, so you’ll be able judge for yourself how Sinatra-esque Stewie’s creator is.

KCRW Exclusive: Glasvegas – Euphoria, Take Me (Jason Rutledge remix)

Many singers don’t shout with an accent. I’m SO happy James Allan, frontman for Scottish rock band Glasvegas, can. Aside from the swirling, epic appears of the music, I can recognize a Glasvegas song in under 10-seconds. And I mean that totally being a compliment.

James wrote the latest album, “Euphoric Heartbreak”, around the corner from KCRW, on the beach here in Santa Monica. We can’t help but listen pertaining to elements of California sunshine creating their way into the anthemic songs. Joey Burns From Calexico Talks About Circo

We like Calexico’s music here at KCRW so when My partner and i heard they were behind the actual soundtrack for Circo, we were intrigued. The music activity is a mix of Mexican along with American pop music along with Calexico’s Joey Burns tells us what it was like to work on the video:

From Joey Burns:

“When director Aaron Schock delivered us an email describing his or her documentary film about three decades of a Mexican family show, it peaked both Steve Convertino’s and my fascination.

What angle would he take with the story, wherever would it lead, and how would it not look and feel?

What we were consequently sent, was an amazing close on the Ponce family who many of us instantly fell in love with. Viewing the amount of work the whole family along with animals had to deal with had been astonishing. The children really are in the middle of it all and whoever has seen it is touched in a very special way.

Aaron sent people a version of the movie with mostly Calexico material in the short term placed to give us a concept of what he wanted musically anf the husband encouraged us to get while creative as we wanted.

This individual wound up working very tightly with us, which eventually directed us all to become good friends. However, we had never met in person due to the low budget nature with the film.

So we sent music sketches and shared suggestions through emails and phone cell phone calls relating to the score. I must say I used to be pleasantly surprised when we finished your project at how much tunes we made in a very short time period and how effective it felt in its relationship to the Ponce family’azines adventures.”–Joey Burns

A true history of creativity in 2011! Circo starts up in LA on The spring 8.  Find out more about where the movie is screening in Los angeles here

Voxhaul Broadcast – “Steal the Diamonds”

It’s interesting what sort of man singing in falsetto can be very sexy. Prince taught me that at an early age, but the song I’m thinking of now is “Steal the Diamonds” by nearby band Voxhaul Broadcast. Thanks to Brian Dennis’ vocals and super groovy bass line, this tune may be one of their best yet.

Stream “Steal the Diamonds”Audio clip: Adobe Flash Gamer (version 9 or above) is necessary to play this audio show. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

When they visited MBE recently, the big conversation was about where their sound was going – they seemed to be straddling two worlds, one a bit more poppy and the various other hard rockin’.

I’m not sure their full-length “Timing is Everything” answers that question and I’m not sure it has to. That features new favorites similar to Diamonds and “Leaving on the 6th,” as well as songs we’ve been spinning on the air for many several weeks, like a new version of “Blackout Conversation” (detailed with chorus handclaps).

When I first met the actual band’s manager early last year, he or she told me that this band was destined to follow the path associated with other Orange County breakout groups like Cold War Little ones. He was sure of that.

They conquered SXSW last month and are touring with Airborne Toxic Event (including a date in the Music Box on Apr 28) so it seems they are well on their way.

Review: Royksopp at The Wiltern

From KCRW volunteer Siea Drucker –

The Wiltern was abuzz last night in anticipation for Royksopp’s descent in to Los Angeles.   A startling amount of people turned out for this display.  The line was seemingly endless.  Good thing I was wearing our walking shoes.

Once we lastly made it in, DJ Mikey / set the tone for the nighttime, spinning magnetic pounding bests while everyone sipped his or her Heinekens and people-watched.  I must say, the crowd on your own was an eye-full.  The movie theater was filled with the most arbitrary aay of scene-sters from Mohawk-coifed tattooed neo-punks, in order to beatnik hippy types, plaid-wearing hipster-nerds, and J. Crew cardigan-clad conservatives.  Royksopp definitely knows how to bring together the particular disparate masses.

Soon, Jon Hopkins took activity is unassumingly; one singular man on one giant stage with a hide of technology at their fingertips and a massive market to please.  He began with a bang, water removal out the meaty beats that actually shook our entire bodies.  I’m fairly sure my kidneys ended up fist-pumping.   His hands flew around his machinery with ease, crisscrossing to pry apart out a pounding largemouth bass you knew was just around the corner.  I was amazed that he were find moments in between the actual cadences to casually sip his or her beer – the epitome associated with cool.

By the time Royksopp took the stage the crowd had somehow grown exponentially.  Packed in just like sardines, I only saw brief slivers of the stage throughout the demonstrate.  And while I know they are a visible band, donning bags on his or her heads, intricate masks, and glowing accouterments aplenty, I can say that I had been fully content with my even experience.

Clearly, these guys have their game down.  They know how to work the crowd, seamlessly mixing soulful trance-like selections from their latest full-length, “Senior“, with effervescent dance-inducing jams from “Junior“.   The viewers reeled with each climactic swell, making for a constant resurgence of energy in their set.

Highlights included “Remind Me” as well as “Happy Up Here.” And remarkably, I really fell for some with the tracks on “Senior” that had evaded our taste before.

If you’re keen on Royksopp, hearing them live is unquestionably worth your while.  Their songs stand out, charged with new meaning as well as power.  So happy these Norwegians made their way offshore to greet us with your energy and talent.

Mad Men Creator Matthew Weiner is Our Guest DJ

Matthew Weiner along with KCRW DJ Dan Wilcox

I must acknowledge, I was a little late towards the Mad Men party. My partner and i kept hearing raves about the show from people I trust, but I just don’t observe that much TV. Then I took place upon a Mad Males marathon on a rainy Saturday and watched 5 straight episodes – I was totally absolutely hooked. It’s like a moving photo. It’s beautiful and every line is perfectly constructed. And the music is great as well.

Turns out, Mad Men inventor Matthew Weiner is a true music fan — we hung out in your KCRW Music Library after the tape ended just to listen to far more songs – and chooses many of the tunes used in the present himself.

His Guest DJ Project was so inspiring, this almost brought tears in order to my eyes sometimes. I’m a bit of a softy but he purposely targeted his song choices on inspiring anthems about staying true to your self — made by artists who followed that creed, from Big Superstar to Bing Crosby and, of course, Joni Mitchell.

It’s interesting that he happens to be throughout negotiations with AMC right now in regards to the future of Mad Men that will seems to reflect a lot of exactly what he said in his DJ set.

Whether or not you watch the show, it’s worth experiencing! Stream/download here

Matthew Weiner’s Guest DJ Arranged Tracklist:

1. Bing Crosby – Brother, Is it possible to spare a dime?

2. John Croce – New York’s not my home

3. Big Star – The Ballad of El Goodo

4. Joni Mitchell – Rainy night house

5. The Decemberists – Chicago, I’m Yours

Coachella Preview in Photos: Simply by Piper Ferguson

Piper Ferguson has photographed a ridiculous number of incredible bands, capturing their essence in her own unique method. I ran into the LA digital photographer at SXSW in Austin along with realized a visual preview associated with Coachella would be a great way to spotlight the woman’s work. She tells us a number of stories and shares a few of her favorite shots below.

Enlarge Season by Piper Ferguson

1. The actual Swell Season – I’ve been luckily enough, thanks to Howard Greynolds, to travel with Glen and Mar documenting many special instances they’ve had. This photo had been taken of them as they exposed their show at Radio stations City Music Hall last Present cards. It was an epic night and Glen’s singing will leave you gob hit.

Black Keys by Piper Ferguson

Hazard Mouse and Dan Auerbach simply by Piper Ferguson

2. The Black Recommendations – Went to Akron, Ohio in a excellent skiing conditions storm to shoot these 2 sweet guys for Mojo.  Saw them at CMJ age groups ago, Coachella, Wiltern, etc. it’s so exciting to watch them explode into this super band, along with only 2 of them (and also a lil help from Danger Mouse!

Dude Garvey by Piper Ferguson

3. What can I have faith that, Elbow and their music indicate a lot to me.  This shot has been taken in 2002 and I remember I had a pretty crazy previous night the shoot, so it ended up being very relaxing to sit about pool side at The Roosevelt only snapping them hanging out.  Guy’s songs, lyrics and their aangements honestly slay me, adore Elbow.

Canine Collective by Piper Ferguson

4. Pet Collective – This was a music group I was asked to target Mojo that I hadn’t seen or heard yet.  I quickly did the pictures, then photographed their demonstrate at the Troubadour. It was a treat to determine them in such a small locale. I had NO idea they were one of the most progressive, creative, artistic bands using incredible energy. I entirely wish I could have seen the concert before the shoot, changes suggestions.

Kele by Piper Ferguson

5. Kele – I’ve seen Bloc Party play everywhere — from Spaceland, the warehouse party at SXSW in 2004, a couple times in Coachella. It’s great to see Kele playing by himself, expanding his universe! He or she ran past me rear stage at Coachella and I watched him go by, then abruptly he came running again, waved at me with a major smile and then took off. That’s exactly how he is..;)

Mariachi El Bronx by Piper Ferguson

6.  Mariachi El Bronx – I photographed The Bronx for Swindle magazine many moons ago since the Temptations.  It was so entertaining and fun. Then last year, Keang asked me to photograph Mariachi El Bronx from SXSW and I didn’t know it was exactly the same band. These guys could entirely hold their own in a assortment sketch comedy music display for HBO.

The Eliminates by Piper Ferguson

7. The Gets rid of – I have a lot of live images of The Kills I’ve taken over the years, but I particularly love this one because it’s taken in back in the Mojave tent at Coachella where these were watching a band.  They are such a fierce live band and this photo – to me – is really sweet and vulnerable of them, like they are fans just presently there to enjoy the show.

Kanye West by Piper Ferguson

8. Kanye – This was initially Kanye played Coachella, in 2006.  I bear in mind thinking “why is Kanye playing this specific cool, low key, indie festival?” I get it now.  He may mess up sometimes however he’s like Jay Unces, no matter what you’re into, an individual can’t help but enjoy him.

Broken Social Arena by Piper Ferguson

9. Broken Interpersonal Scene – I met them through Director Edgar Wright when they told me they were doing the music activity for Scott Pilgrim and he took me to see them. It was at Sundown Junction and they played unbelievably. Filter Magazine wanted to do their first horizontal cover with them in Toronto and so i jumped to do it. I referred to it as my indie rock Vainness Fair shoot.

The Shots by Piper Ferguson

10.  The Swings – This photo was photo at The Troubadour in 1999. I remember Joe Strummer asked me to introduce your ex to Julian, so I did i have a photo of them someplace. The gig was crazy. I was shooting a haphazard note for Rolling Rock and they didn’t’ want to do it given that they were having so much exciting — as you can see by the photo. Finally, by about 2am, I was able to coral them in the booth and get some shots.

Street Artist Mister Toon is Our Guest Disc-jockey

Mister Cartoon, 1963, International Ice Cream Truck, 2010, A special adhessive enamel candy painted freehand on truck by Mister Ctoons, image by Estevan Oriol

Mister Cartoon’s exquisite, candy-colored ice cream truck will certainly be one of the highlights of MOCA’s landmark block art exhibit opening last week. The legendary street performer – and LA native — will have four pieces on display on the Geffen Contemporary for the exhibit, jogging April 17 to September 8.

To be honest, I understood him primarily as a tattoo artist to the stars (Eminem, Dr. Dre, Justin Timberlake) but it was very clear in their Guest DJ Project established that muraling cars is his or her true passion. I also learned how much oldies – from old heart and soul to classic rock — possess influenced the art of the engine, particularly when it comes to airbrushing low bikers.

Cartoon also credits reggae and other music with keeping him young.

“I’m an artist away from pure love. If I don’t draw, I get kinda nauseous in my stomach. Now it’s more of a business – I went from homeboy to homeowner. But I gotta retain my head in the street as a result of artwork I do. I have to continue to be 18 years old in my go. I just try and stay cuent so far as artwork goes. This songs really does influence you.”Check out and about his Guest DJ arranged here

Gold Panda Live on KCRW

Gold Panda is hard to categorize. The UK musician (birth name Derwin Panda — yes, truly) told Jason today which his music works better in the rock venue because, from his perspective, its not dance music. He says his stay set is noisy rather than exactly what you would expect from a good electronica artist. In fact, his established apparently caused the formation of a mosh pit at the Troubadour over the weekend — not necessarily something you would see at a rave.

Panda also told us all not to expect to see a music group joining on stage shortly, as he likes “complete control,” and to keep things simple.

I could only imagine it’s hard to turn music you create with your bedroom live to ANY audience in fact, but he does rid of it.

“You” in particular strikes these emotional chords with me that I can’t very explain, but I think it’s universal among those that hear the song. Panda says the purposeful, which makes it all the more interesting. Take a listen and try it your self. The full set is in the archives here.
