UPDATE: The Josh Brolin / Javier Bardem Onstage Hug You Didn’t See
Thursday, February 23rd, 2012Up-to-date.
From our at-home view of last Sunday’s Academy Awards, there was a really lengthy photo of Penelope Cruz when Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem took the stage and danced their own way to the microphone. This particular seemed to be more than just a reminder from the romantic links between Henderson and Bardem, however. There was a bit action onstage that was masked with the shot.
When Brolin and Bardem appeared in their matching white jackets, shirts and bow ties, they shared a quick kiss on the lips. It seemed that ABC was aghast with the utter horror of a couple of men’s lips touching, do some quick editing, as well as opted instead to show an extended glimpse of Cruz to save everyone from such scandalous Hollywood happenings.
But a longer clip unveils something much different.

What seemed to be reduce:
In response to increasing criticism over the apparent cut, out there Oscar producer Bruce Cohen sent a statement in order to AfterElton. He wrote: It [the dance and the kiss] was unscripted, and the program in the truck was always to cut to Penelope in the viewers applauding Josh’s and Javier’s introduction, so that is the thing that happened, just as they were beginning to dance. Josh and Javier’s moment (My partner and i saw them start to dance, but, to be honest, I have no clue if they kissed — that’s the first We’ve heard of that) would have created a great TV moment, but as no one knew it was coming, we cut to the gorgeous Mz. Cruz as planned. When we cut back from the woman’s close-up, Josh and Javier were walking to your podium.
Matter settled? Not by the long shot.
Though there’s a long shot of Henderson — which many casual visitors noticed — it actually doesn’t appear to have hidden anything but the actors’ boogie to the mic. As the cut below shows — one that starts well before the others with Anne Hathaway’s lead-in — it will look like the kiss aired. It just aired in a long photo that makes the kiss almost indiscernible.
Finding that, as it aired:
What’s strange is that when asked about the actual uproar, ABC’s official response is No comment.
